As of Thursday night, two tornado reports had been made in Indiana and five in Ohio, according to the Storm Prediction Center. After a months-long public campaign that began shortly after Mayor Brandon Johnson (right) took office in May, advocates reached a deal with restaurant industry lobbyists to phase out the tipped-minimum wage over five years. "The closest pending victory is in Chicago," said Saru Jayaraman, founder and president of the advocacy group One Fair Wage. Three-fourths said they would reduce the number of tipped workers on their payroll, and nearly half said the cuts would be significant. The $9.48 an hour wage most workers got cost the restaurant $5,449.61, he said, a fraction of the $17,198 in tips workers earned. That's one reason why the restaurant industry engaged in a kind of bidding war against itself, to find a compromise solution that politicians like Alderman Carlos Ramirez Rosa, Johnson's floor manager in the City Council, would buy.

Walmart announced Tuesday it will abruptly close four underperforming Chicago stores, citing millions in annual losses. The company said its eight Chicago stores collectively have not been profitable since the first opened 17 years ago. Walmart said all employees at these four stores are eligible to transfer to other Walmart locations and will be paid through Aug. 11. The company will keep its other four Chicago stores open, it said. As of Jan. 31, the company operated more than 5,300 retail locations, including Supercenters, discount stores, Sam's Clubs and small-format stores.

Over the course of several years, designer Sarah Vaile decorated almost every inch of a couple’s house in the Lakeview neighborhood of Chicago. Both husband and wife are doctors with busy schedules, so they asked Ms. Vaile to turn a third-floor storage space into a sunroom and lounge for relaxing and entertaining. “They have two teenagers and everyone in the house was feeling the need to spread out,” Ms. Vaile says. “It was intended to be an escape for the parents, but everybody loves it, so there’s a bit of competition for the area.”Ms. Vaile’s eponymous Chicago-based company is known for its colorful and lively designs, and in this room finished in July 2022, she went for a year-round summer palette. “In their living room, we went with a deep raspberry and mint,” she says.
